Have you ever wondered
what can happen if you hire an unqualified contractor?
Home remodel, or improvement projects
can be very challenging for someone who has no
experience in construction. Likewise, if you have
not hired a contractor before you may not know what to
look for during the hiring process.
Recently, we were called out to look at
a bathroom remodel. The homeowner was distraught because
they had already hired, and paid someone to do the work, and their
bathroom was a mess. This was a rental house and they
already had tenants move in. The tenants had been there
about a month already.
Here is a preview of what we saw when
we went out to look at the bathroom.
Now you won't believe what this is, stuck
on the walls and floor of the shower... It's vinyl stick
on tiles! The grout lines have caulking to fill the
gaps. Apparently the tub had been removed, but the
plumbing valve had not been raised so that you had to
turn on the shower from about knee height.
Of course, the first thing we asked was
"How long has this been like this?" You could smell the
mold throughout the house. The shower floor was about to
give way as it was not waterproofed at all and the water
was just running down into the floor cavity underneath.
Wait till you see what it looked like
when we tore it out! There's a handy dandy little pop
bottle funnel under that drain in the floor!
This poor homeowner was in desperate
need of our help. They had hired someone as a contractor
without checking for references, without checking for a
business license and without knowing if the contractor
was even insured. They paid this person almost $3,000.00
to do this to their property. These are things you need
to know if you are going to hire someone to complete a
home remodel.
Needless to say, we gave this poor
homeowner an estimate and got their project started
right away. Time was of the essence since the whole
bathroom was dripping wet with water and had been that
way for over a month. Concern of the framing and joists
rotting away would come soon.
Here is what we uncovered under the shower floor. This
was the so called "contractors" idea of
a sloped floor for a shower. Click on the picture to see
a larger view, but here is a description of what you
see. It is a few sticks cut to size and pointing toward
the drain. Then a layer of OSB was installed with some sort of glue
(that is the white) over the top of the stick wedges.
Then the tiles were stuck directly to the OSB.

Now as if that wasn't bad enough, look
at this picture! This is that pop bottle drain I was
telling you about. It was shoved into the drain pipe and
screwed to the bottom of the tile. Then clear silicone
was filled in around it. This is a true nightmare for
any unsuspecting homeowner. Not only was the drain a
joke, but the plumbing was too.
This next picture
shows the raw plumbing. As you can see the valve is duct
taped to prevent it from dripping. The problem was... it
didn't work! LOL... it was dripping at a steady pace
inside the wall, and seeping through the wall into the
master bedroom closet.
Once we removed all of the mess and let
the place dry out we started repairs and putting
everything together correctly... the way it should have been done in
the first place.
